Texture, opulence, and everything gold

Yes, the holiday season is one for twinkling lights, warm beverages, and heartfelt gatherings with family and friends. But what do we most look forward to every year at Cole’s? Holiday gift sets. Particularly Oribe’s holiday gift sets, which feature stunning limited edition packaging designed each year by a different artist of a different medium.

“The holiday sets are a wonderful part of the Oribe culture, and everyone gets involved,” Daniel Kaner, president of Oribe and a longtime friend of Cole’s Salon, shared with us. Cole’s and Oribe have been working together for decades, a relationship built on a mutual dedication to artistry and education. One of our own stylists, Liz, is currently part of Oribe’s prestigious Journey to Mastery program. “Everyone has a stake in them: the storytellers, the fragrance people, the engineers … it mixes things up instead of constantly doing the same packaging.”

Jennifer Lacy Smith, vice president of product creation at Oribe, agreed. “It brings together all of our teams to work collaboratively but in a way that’s very joyful. They’re learning something that’s outside of their sphere of expertise. People clamor to do it every year. It has found its way into our leadership training and how we work with our teams and get them to interact in a really constructive and collaborative way.”

Past holiday set collections have highlighted the work of hand-drawn, watercolor, pottery, digital, and textile artists. For this year’s collection (which is quickly becoming our new all-time favorite), the team partnered with Finnish multidisciplinary artist Kustaa Saksi, whose work is deeply inspired by his Nordic background. The Oribe team discovered his art through a series of window dressings Saksi previously executed for luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman.

“Our sets are truly a collaboration with the artists,” Smith said. “We’ll seek out an artist who is interesting in terms of their dedication to their craft, the technique, the material, and the storytelling they do. Not only have they mastered what they do in terms of artwork, they have a very signature aesthetic. We share with them who Oribe Canales, our founder, was as a man. We talk about hairdressing. And then we come to an agreement on how we’re going to approach the designs.”

The prevailing themes of this year’s holiday sets are gold, texture, and opulence — a combination that elevates the brand’s packaging from a simple, functional box into an artistic canvas.

“Gold was a really big theme in Oribe Canales’ life,” Smith said of the late founder, a world-renowned celebrity hair stylist who worked with clients like Jennifer Lopez and Sarah Jessica Parker before partnering with Kaner in 2008 to create a namesake line of haircare products. “If we were doing packaging design in the old days, we’d say, ‘Okay Oribe, what should the packaging look like?’ And he’d always say, ‘Gold. Everything should be dripping in gold!’ So Saksi used golden threads throughout his designs.”

The result: packaging adorned in layered gold foils and intricate embossing, with artwork inspired by the Norse goddess Sif’s golden flowing hair. Saksi’s artwork also took inspiration from the black and cream ombre design of Oribe’s Gold Lust collection, one of the company’s bestsellers, as well as the bright blue of Oribe’s Supershine collection.

To further celebrate the beauty of Saksi’s work, Oribe also commissioned the artist to bring his designs to life in the form of a one-of-a-kind tapestry. It’s more than 10 feet long and took the artist six months to create.

“We’ve never done anything as abstract as this,” Smith told us. “What’s really interesting is that, with these sets, there’s this exchange between the artist’s archives and Oribe’s archives. And a lot of times there’s something that an artist will pick up on that is really intriguing to them about Oribe Canales. A past artist was inspired by his tattoos. For Kustaa, the weaving he does in his tapestries, we gravitated to it because it felt a lot like what a stylist does behind the chair with someone’s hair.”

Oribe saw hairdressing as a fine form of artistry,” Kaner added. “He didn’t see it any other way. And hairdressers — people who work at Cole’s, people who work in some of the salons that we work with — are designers and artists.”

When we asked Kaner and Smith which of the four holiday sets they were most eager to get out into the world, the two were in agreement.

“It’s the liters,” Kaner said, referring both to the Gold Lust Liter Set and Oribe’s liter design more generally. “In the old days, in perfumeries, they used to have this thing called a factice, which was a big, oversized bottle of perfume — a giant version of whatever fine perfume was being sold. I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could take our small bottle and make it a large bottle?’ It would look like a factice, totally different from all of our competitors’ stuff.”

“The liter size was one of the first assignments Daniel gave me when I joined the company,” Smith added. “It was so fun to make them, and such a challenge with the manufacturers. It had to be perfection. And when we decided we wanted to do a liter set, I was like, ‘You can’t get two bottles of liters and put them in a shopping bag and send somebody out. It has to be more fabulous than that.’ We built this book-like style packaging with a handle, so it doesn’t need a shopping bag. You just walk out of the salon with that. It’s so glamorous. And what a better calling card for the brand to see someone carrying that? It’s just really extraordinary and hefty, and it’s the greatest gift to give.”

Kaner has shared countless times with us the importance of being a life-long learner — something that has been part of the development and execution of the Oribe holiday collaborations over the last eight years. By engaging artists from different disciplines, Oribe has created an annual moment for the haircare community to learn and appreciate the nuances of artistry, craftsmanship, materials, technique, and culture in an engaging and joyful way.

Oribe’s 2025 holiday sets are available now, both online and at all Cole’s Salon locations. In addition to the Gold Lust Liter Set and Gold Lust Collection Set, we also carry the Hair Alchemy Heatless Styling Set and Côte d’Azur Hand Wash and Crème Set.

“Cole’s guests have always supported Oribe — they’re one of our original visionary partnerships,” Kaner shared. “It makes sense. I’m from Minnesota, and they’re from Minnesota too. But they also really saw what Oribe could be in the earliest days. Most people don’t have that level of vision. I think it really speaks to their guests. We really thank the Cole’s guests for making Oribe so famous in Minnesota. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

As the seasons shift, so do our hair color cravings. Fall is always about cozy textures and richer palettes, but this year’s hair trends are taking it a step further — think luminous shine, luxury tones and effortless finishes. From dimensional blondes to moody hues, the spotlight for Fall 2025 is all about glass-like shine that elevates any shade.

Luxury Blonde

Blonde is never just blonde anymore. This season, the trend leans into high-end, refined blondes with soft dimension. Gone are the brassy, one-note shades. Instead, stylists are creating blends that feel natural, lived-in and ultra-luxurious. Think buttery champagne, creamy beige and icy ribbons layered with depth. Perfect for clients who want blonde that feels elevated without screaming “high maintenance.”

Dimensional Depth

Dimension is everything this fall. Whether you’re brunette, blonde or red, the key is to let light and shadow play together. Subtle balayage, face-framing brightness and lowlight weaving give hair a sense of movement and richness. The goal isn’t high-contrast highlights but rather a multi-tonal effect that feels both soft and striking.

Effortless Hair Color

There’s a big shift toward hair color that looks chic but effortless — almost like you woke up with it. This means blurred root melts, soft transitions and shades that grow out gracefully. It’s low-maintenance luxury at its finest. Clients want hair that works with their lifestyle while still feeling polished.

Moody Tones

Fall wouldn’t be fall without deeper hues, and this year’s moody tones are bolder than ever. Espresso brunettes, rich mahoganies, smoky coppers and even inky blacks are making a comeback. These shades bring drama, shine, and sophistication, perfect for when the air turns crisp and the wardrobe shifts darker.

Glass Hair: The Biggest Trend

Above all, the biggest trend of the season is shine. Stylists are calling it glass hair — that reflective, silky, liquid finish that makes any color pop. It’s not just about the shade you choose, but how healthy, smooth, and radiant your hair looks under the light.

Here are some top products to achieve glass hair:

  • Oribe Mirror Rinse – a luxe, shine-boosting treatment that transforms dull strands.
  • Aveda Miraculous Oil – deeply nourishing for softness and light-reflective gloss.
  • Bumble and bumble Styling Oil – a lightweight oil that tames frizz and enhances brilliance.

Styling tip: Apply a few drops of oil to damp hair before blow-drying, then finish with a touch on the ends for that extra sleek, polished look.

This fall, whether you’re going blonde, brunette or somewhere in between, the real focus is dimension and shine. Hair that looks healthy, effortless and radiant will always be in style, but this season, we’re chasing that glass-like glow.

The leaves may be starting to turn color, and the air might feel a bit cooler, but this fall’s hair color trends are all about warmth, depth and natural style.

Leading the pack is honey blonde — a soft, golden hue that flatters every skin tone. It blends the best of blonde and brunette, offering a sun-kissed glow that’s easy to maintain with soft roots and subtle highlights. This radiant shade brings out warmth and shine, making it a favorite for clients looking to brighten up their look without going too light.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, rich brunettes are taking over, with shades like chocolate brown, chestnut and espresso brown making waves. These multidimensional tones add luxe depth and shimmer without needing a lot of maintenance. A few caramel ribbons or glossy overlays can elevate any dark base, giving brunettes a polished, fall-ready refresh. It’s a sophisticated way to embrace cooler weather with richness and shine.

For those who love a more natural, effortlessly cool vibe, lived-in blonde continues to trend hard this season. Think balayage, root smudging and soft bronde tones that grow out beautifully between appointments. This style offers that “just back from vacation” feel with very little upkeep — ideal for busy schedules. Whether you’re transitioning from summer blonde or adding warmth to a cooler blonde base, this look gives movement and texture without demanding constant salon visits.

Stop into any Cole’s salon this fall to get the fall refresh you need this season!

August is flying by, and somehow it’s almost time to send the kids back to school. This means families everywhere are back to juggling busy, hectic mornings — packing lunches, picking outfits, and doing everyone’s hair.

Kelsey B., an advanced designer at our Apple Valley salon, is always on the lookout for easy hairstyles that look great, stay put, and don’t take forever to do.

“For my boys, we usually keep the sides short and leave some length on top. Then, I can style that into the ‘fluffy’ look they love,” Kelsey says. “My gol-to combo is Bumble and bumble’s Texture Cream for hold and definition, finished with a mist of Does It All hairspray. The result is a little messy and a little polished. Just right for school.”

Kelsey’s daughter likes to switch up her looks depending on the day. “We rotate between leaving her hair down and curled or adding bubble braids, sometimes both,” she says. “Bubble braids are such a fun, easy upgrade to a simple style. No matter what we’re doing, Bumble and bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer is a must. It protects her hair from heat and UV rays, and it makes styling a breeze.”

As back-to-school season picks up, we hope you give one or all of these ideas a try!

From your head to your toes, we’ve got all of the hottest summer trends covered here at Cole’s! Here’s what’s popular this season:

Hair: Half-Up Soft Waves

When it comes to hair, this summer is all about embracing effortless, natural movement, making soft waves a must-have. Whether you’re aiming for a relaxed, beachy vibe or a more polished “mermaid wave” look, texture is key and can be enhanced with some light styling products. Half-up styles are also super popular right now. They help keep your hair out of your face while still showing off length and texture, striking a balance between casual chic and refined sophistication!

Skin: Dermaplaning + High-Quality Products

Summer is a perfect time to reset your skin with a facial. We have tons of options at Cole’s, but the add-on everyone is asking for right now is dermaplaning! This service uses a medical grade scalpel to gently get rid of any peach fuzz while also exfoliating dead skin and buildup. It’s great for those bright summer days when every single facial hair seems to glisten in the sun, and your skin and makeup will look so smooth.

Another big trend in skincare is looking at a product’s ingredients — is this stuff actually good for my skin, or is the product going viral for no reason? At Cole’s, we use skincare lines for professional use only, and we personalize your experience based on your specific skincare goals. Eminence is an all-natural brand that only uses plants, foods, and minerals! They also plant a tree and help a child in hunger with all your purchases. I personally love knowing I’m doing more than just helping my skin every time I do my skincare routine.

Nails: Every Color of the Rainbow

It’s time to ditch the closed-toe shoes and let your pedicure shine. This summer’s polish trends are all about bold expression, playful energy, and a little bit of nostalgia. Timeless shades like classic reds continue to make their mark, offering a look that’s both chic and sophisticated. Try Gelish’s Scandalous, or Stand Out for a deeper tone.

If you’re feeling adventurous, neon hues are making a big splash, especially vibrant pinks and electric corals that practically glow in the sunlight. Craving something cool and refreshing? Ocean blues in shades from turquoise to deep sea navy are trending, capturing a dreamy coastal vibe. And don’t forget the sunshine itself! Bold yellows are brightening things up and giving a cheerful twist to any summer look.

The Let’s Roll collection from Gelish and Morgan Taylor is right on point with these summer colors, making it the perfect go-to for updating your pedicure game this season. Book that salon appointment and get your toes ready to turn heads!

For clients who have thin hair, or who want to instantly go from a shorter look to something longer and fuller, we recommend extensions!

At Cole’s, we use easihair pro tape-in and hand-tied extensions. Their 100 percent human hair composition means they effortlessly blend in with the rest of your natural hair and are capable of withstanding heat styling. Tape-in extensions last for six to eight weeks, are ideal for fine hair and have a faster application time. Hand-tied extensions last for around eight to ten weeks, work well to add length and volume to blunt cuts and are a little easier to care for.

Our expertly trained stylists will help you decide if tape-in or hand-tied extensions are right for you. No matter which you choose, caring for your new extensions is crucial to maintaining your long, full locks. Here, we walk you through some dos and don’ts for taking care of your new look.

Wash With Care: Make sure you use gentle shampoos and conditioners. I love the Oribe Hair Alchemy Shampoo and Oribe Gold Lust Conditioner

Use Heat Protectant: When using heat tools on your new extensions, make sure you apply a heat protectant first to protect against damage. One of my favorites is the Oribe Gold Lust Heat Protection Spray. Also, make sure your tools are set at 300-350 degrees Fahrenheit — no hotter!

Choose Your Sunscreens Wisely: With sunnier days ahead, make sure you protect your skin and your new extensions! Many sunscreens have ingredients in them that can damage extensions and cause them to turn an orange-y color. An easy rule of thumb: Mineral- and reef-safe sunscreens are also safe for your extensions — go with those!

The IMAGE Skincare Advanced Smartblend Mineral Moisturizers or the Daily Prevention Protect and Refresh Mist are both great options. A few other brands we recommend are Sun Bum Mineral, Coola Mineral and Bare Republic Mineral.

Go the extra mile for your tape-in extensions: Once your tape-in extensions are in, it’s crucial to avoid shampooing, exercising or doing anything else that might get your hair damp or wet for 48 hours. The bonding on your tape-ins needs time to cure. This is super important, so don’t skip this step! While blow drying your hair, you can also press the bonding panels on your extensions together to help them stay strong in between applications. Another great way to protect your new hair is to invest in a silk pillowcase to prevent any tugging on the bonds while you sleep.

Curious about extensions? Our stylists are here to walk you through your options. Call your Cole’s today to set up a consultation.

Our stylists love helping their clients with hair and skincare questions, from which products to try to which cut might work best with their face shape.

Lately, though, our team has been getting a lot of questions about one topic specifically: hair growth! And in this blog, Carolyn A. from our Savage salon answers some of them.

How important is a healthy scalp when it comes to hair growth?

Very important! Our scalp is just as important as the skin on our face, yet we put more effort in taking care of our skin than our scalp. If you have a blemish or a new wrinkle? There’s a cream for that. We invest whatever it takes, whatever the cost, to fix what we see in the mirror. But what about the areas we don’t see?

Your scalp is the foundation from which your hair grows, and neglecting your scalp’s health can lead to a number of issues, including hair thinning. The types of products we expose to our scalp can greatly affect the health of that environment, which in turn affects the health of the hair. A well-conditioned, well-taken-care-of scalp can promote new hair growth.

Will a healthy scalp help me grow my hair longer?

For this question, the answer lies in the health of your hair follicles. It’s vital to keep your scalp clear of excess product and buildup because hair grows easier when it doesn’t have to break through all that accumulated product. And every season can bring its own irritations to your scalp. The winter months lack the humidity and moisture our skin needs, and as a result people get flaky, irritated scalps. I recommend my clients switch up their shampoo and conditioner from winter to summer to increase the amount of moisture their scalp is getting.

Also, any client who uses daily hair products and/or who goes days between washes should always add a clarifying shampoo, like Bumble and bumble Sunday Shampoo, once a week. I like to think of it as a reset button for your scalp and hair. A daily shampoo can only cleanse the surface. That’s why most shampoos instruct you to “lather, rinse, repeat.” If it doesn’t lather well during the first wash, it’s best to repeat and wash twice to get everything clean. Most people don’t do this, so using a clarifier once in a while is like insurance for a healthier scalp.

Which brings me to …

How frequently should I wash my hair for optimal hair growth?

This varies for different scalp types. Clients with oily scalps should wash more frequently to prevent buildup. They may also need other products like scrubs to exfoliate excess oils, something daily shampoos don’t deliver. I recommend Bumble and Bumbles ‘Seaweed Whipped Scalp Scrub. Clients with normal scalps should wash every 2 to 3 days, and clients with flaky scalps may need a prescription shampoo with ingredients like salicylic acid to help prevent dandruff. If you have a dry scalp, you can wash less frequently, using moisturizing shampoo, like the Oribe Moisture and Control line, every 3 to 5 days. This will help nourish the scalp and hair, leading to hair growth.

How often should I get a haircut if I’m trying to grow it out?

Most people’s hair grows about a half an inch per month, and getting regular haircuts can promote healthier hair growth by getting rid of your split ends. Once your ends split, that split travels up the whole hair strand, making your hair more likely to break off. Does your hair have a lot of flyaways? Chances are it’s the result of not getting it trimmed often enough. Or it may be from heat, chemical, and/or mechanical damage. If you can avoid these, your hair will stay healthy as it grows.

I personally recommend a haircut every 4 to 6 weeks, but be sure to consult your stylist for their recommendation based on your hair type and style. I once had a client who could never get her hair to grow. I recommended she come in more frequently for dry cuts every 3 to 4 weeks at the first sign of breakage. We would trim just a quarter inch to get rid of the split ends, and every third or fourth cut we’d give it a half-inch trim. Soon, we were able to get it inches longer than we’d ever been able to before! That experience convinced me that to grow healthier hair, you must prioritize time at the salon for a bit more maintenance and invest in the right product regimen for your hair type. You’ll have a healthier scalp in no time — and longer, fuller hair.

Need some help revitalizing your scalp? Looking for the right clarifying product for your hair? Worried that your hair isn’t growing as fast as you’d like? Our team is ready to help. Stop in to shop or book an appointment today.

Our scalp, just like the rest of our body, naturally produces oil, and when hair is on the finer or thinner side, it can easily build up between washings. Toss in some dirt or sweat — whether from exercise or just, you know, living life! — and it might even look or feel greasy and limp after just a day or two.

If that sounds like you, you’re probably well-versed in the dry shampoo department.

Dry shampoo works exactly like it sounds: by using powdery, starchy ingredients to absorb the excess oil that’s built up on your scalp and hair without having to wash it. But with so many products available on the market, it can be hard to figure out which ones work, feel, and smell the best. After all, no one wants that annoying white residue or gritty texture left behind!

Here are my top three product picks:

  • Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Dry Shampoo: This dry shampoo is a must-have for anyone who is constantly on the go — perfect for rushed mornings when you don’t have time to wash your hair but need to look presentable! Its formula absorbs excess oil without a white residue, so your hair looks clean and refreshed. But what makes it even better is its focus on scalp health. Ingredients like salicylic acid help keep your scalp microbiome clear and balanced. Plus, it adds volume and texture, making your hair look fuller between washes, and it has Oribe’s signature scent to keep your hair smelling clean and fresh! My secret trick is to use it at night, so it soaks up the oils while you sleep!
  • Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo: This one also absorbs excess oil, so you can skip a wash without looking like you just rolled out of bed. Plus, it has a luxurious formula that not only gives your hair volume and texture but also includes nourishing ingredients that keep your hair looking healthy. Its signature scent is just the icing on the cake! Overall, it’s a super versatile product that works on all hair types, making it a go-to for anyone trying to keep up that perfect style without a daily wash.
  • Bumble and bumble Prêt-à-Powder Dry Shampoo: This powder is amazing for its effectiveness in refreshing hair between washes. It absorbs oil, sweat and odor, leaving hair looking clean and volumized without any residue left behind! This dry shampoo also combines the benefits of a traditional dry shampoo with a lightweight styling powder, allowing it to revive flat hair while also adding texture and body. It has a subtle fragrance that keeps you feeling fresh all day long and is suitable for all hair types, making it a great solution for anyone looking to keep their hair looking its best without the work of a full hair wash.

Whether you’re looking for a spray dry shampoo or a more traditional powder that doubles as a styling product, we’ve got what you need here at Cole’s. Shop online or stop into one of our salons today!

In the world of hair color, trends come and go just like with any other kind of fashion. But one trend that’s taken salons by storm this past year — and seems to be sticking around for good! — is lived-in hair color.

Why You Should Try It

Lived-in color is all about creating soft, seamless, natural-looking color transitions in the hair. It’s a low-maintenance style that embraces your hair’s natural color and beauty. Unlike traditional highlights, which can leave harsh lines near the root of the hair as it grows out, a lived-in artistry color is designed to blend, allowing for longer time between appointments and making it a no-brainer for many of our clients.

If you’re interested in lived-in color — or in transitioning from a more high-maintenance coloring technique — a thorough consultation with your stylist is necessary. They will assess your hair texture, natural hair color, the condition of your hair and your desired overall look. Bringing in inspiration pictures is always helpful, too, so we can understand your ultimate hair dream and make sure we’re on the same page. There are many ways to achieve lived-in color, and your stylist will be able to pinpoint the exact technique to use on you to achieve the best result.

Two Tips for Maintaining Your Lived-In Color

After experimenting with a new hair color at the salon, it’s crucial to protect your investment with both at-home and follow-up hair care. My favorite go-to products for my color clients are Oribe’s Gold Lust Repair and Restore Shampoo and Conditioner, Wella’s Miracle Hair Repair line, and Oribe’s  Supershine line.

After receiving a lived-in hair color treatment, your color appointments do not have to be as frequent. However, we recommend scheduling a gloss every six to eight weeks to maintain and refresh your color, which will also help keep its longevity.

At Cole’s Salon, we receive the best hair training in the world and are given first-class opportunities to learn new trends, which ultimately makes us better stylists behind the chair. If you’re ready to try something new — or to simplify your hair color and enhance your natural beauty — book a consultation with us!

This season is all about the flashbacks when it comes to men’s hairstyles. From the modern mullet, to the blowout taper, to the classic buzz cut, step back in time with a new (and — thankfully — improved) look!

The Modern Mullet

You heard that right. The classic mullet is in … but with a twist!

This reinvented cut is all about adding layers and texture to give it a fresh, contemporary look that takes the best of this ‘80s style and leaves the rest in the time capsule.

The sides, and even sometimes the fringe, is cut shorter than the traditional mullet, giving it an edgy profile with a bold look!

The Blowout Taper

This style, made famous on TikTok, gives you an ultra short taper around the perimeter and long length with texture on the top of the head.

The idea here is to leave the top, which comes down past the occipital bone (located at the back and lower part of the skull) with some messier texture but have clean lines underneath with the taper.

This style works best for men who have some natural wave or curl!

The Classic Buzz Cut

Yep, it’s finally back! The traditional, short buzz cut, in which the length of your hair is the same on all parts of the head.

You can add your own uniqueness to the look by doing a low fade, including a design, or even adding a pop of color. But even without anything extra, the classic buzz looks clean and is equal parts professional and edgy.

Stop into Cole’s to rock one of these fall trends. Book an appointment today!
